TIGER HILL UPDATE |
Oriental Tiger Wins German Gr1 Rheinland-Pokal In Germany overnight, shuttler Tiger Hill (Danehill-The Filly, by Appiani) added a Group 1 triumph when 6YO entire Oriental Tiger (Tiger Hill-Oriental Flower, by Big Shuffle) scored a front-running 7-lengths victory in the €155,000 (A$264,000) Gr1 Rheinland-Pokal Der Sparkkasse Kolnbonn (2400m) at Cologne.
Oriental Tiger defeated this season's Gr1 German Derby-winning 3YO colt Kamsin (Samum-Kapitol, by Winged Love) & UK-bred multiple Gr2-winning 5YO entire Papal Bull (Montjeu-Mialuna, by Zafonic). Previously this year Oriental Tiger also won both April's German Gr2 Gerling-Preis (2400m) at Cologne & Gr3 Kolner Grand Prix Aufgalopp (2200m) at Cologne.
Back in 2006 Oriental Tiger finished runner-up in Germany's Gr1 Grosser Preis Von Baden (2400m) at Baden Baden, as well as 3rd in both the Gr1 Deutsches Derby (2400m) at Hamburg & Gr3 Preis Dr Busch Memorial (1700m) at Krefeld; & in 2005 he finished 3rd in the Gr3 Preis Des Winterfavoriten (1600m) at Cologne.

TWO MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW |
Xavier followed in the hoofsteps of King's First and made it two metro wins in a row on Saturday (2nd August). He took his race record to five wins from seven starts this year when he took out the 1500m Winter Championship at Rosehill.
Once again there was good pace in the race and he was able to sit mid-field, although he looked awkwardly placed inside horses. Upon straightening he kicked clear quickly to record a two length win and a class record, at his first attempt in open company. Danny Nikolic was full of praise for the horse he has ridden to three wins, with Blake Shinn recording the other two.
King's First, who also scored in the last race of the day two weeks ago at Rosehill when Xavier took out race three, will be out to make it a hat-trick this coming Saturday at Rosehill when he starts over his favourite distance of 1800m.
We have now had four Saturday city winners from four starters with these two horses in five weeks.

APPROPRIATE WIN FOR XAVIER |
Xavier now enters the Top Ten Horses - NSW Metropolitan table with his 4 wins this season. He has won four of his last six starts and we are looking forward to a nice spring campaign.
Trainer Bart Cummings :
“The Pope’s here (in Sydney) and I think that the Pope was going to have a bet today, and I am sure that this was the one that he chose, because the bible would indicate that this was the chosen one today,” Cummings said. “Bless him. Been working on it for months.”
Impressive Win for Xavier Tara Madgwick Saturday, 19 July 2008
Widden Stud based King Cugat (USA) featured at Rosehill on Saturday with an impressive winner in the shape of the Bart Cummings trained three year-old Xavier. Having his second run back from a spell of 19 weeks, Xavier settled beautifully for leading rider Blake Shinn and powered home to win the 1400 metre Ratings 81 event by more than two lengths. “He got to them easily and had them covered a long way out,” said Shinn. “He has a good turn of foot and is a horse with plenty of upside.” Xavier (pictured left) was purchased for $80,000 by King Thoroughbreds at the 2006 Magic Millions Yearling Sale and has proven a great result for his lucky group of owners in winning four of 12 starts and earning $161,250 in prizemoney. Bred and offered for sale by Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud Xavier is the third foal of the Danehill (USA) mare Vintage Power, a half-sister to stakes-winner Great Anna from the Group Two winning stayer Great Vintage, who ran fourth in the Group One VRC Melbourne Cup when trained by Bart Cummings. King's First also won on the day, taking out the last race over 1800m, making it two in a row for the son of Shrewdy and a double for King Thoroughbreds.

Bart's blinkered outlook on Rough Habit Plate |
Queensland Derby favourite Moatize will wear blinkers for the first time as he tries to break maiden ranks at Group III level in Brisbane on Saturday.
Trainer Bart Cummings worked Moatize in blinkers this week ahead of his $125,000 Rough Habit Plate (2020m) assignment at Doomben.
“His trackwork was impressive in the blinkers so Bart will leave them on for raceday,” Cummings’s racing manager Bill Charles said.
“Bart was hoping the blinkers would switch him on and so far it looks like they have done the trick.”
Moatize has raced just four times and has been runner-up in three starts, the most recent when a close second to Rockwood in the Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Randwick on May 3.
Suspended jockey Blake Shinn rode Moatize at Randwick and Hugh Bowman takes the Rough Habit mount.
“Blake got off him at Randwick and said he felt like a genuine Caulfield Cup horse,” Charles said.
Charles said the tight-turning Doomben circuit presented some concerns for Moatize’s racing style but he expects the luckless galloper to still be in the finish.
“Doomben is a query … he’s obviously going to be better when he gets to Eagle Farm,” Charles said.
“He’s a horse who likes to wind up but if he is within four or five lengths of the leaders on the turn he will be hard to beat.”
Moatize is a $3.60 favourite for the Rough Habit and he heads Queensland Derby betting at $4.80.

KING'S FIRST WINS AGAIN |
King's First has improved each start this campaign, with his last start second converting to a well-earned win for both horse and jockey today at Canterbury (7th May). It was a perfect ride by Blake Shinn, 11 out of 10, according to Bart Cumming's stable foreman John Thompson. This was the first occasion in 5 starts the horse was in the right part of the track and had clear running to the line, the step up to 1900m suited as well.
This is our second win at Canterbury in two weeks.

MOATIZE MOTORS HOME |
Moatize has now had four starts for three seconds with his most recent run a super effort at Group 3 level. He flew home for a 'short neck' second to Rockwood on Saturday (3rd May) in the Frank Packer Plate over 2000m. He was previously unplaced in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes after being held up for a run. He also appreciated the firmer footing at Randwick on Saturday over the heavy track last start.
Obviously we are happy with his progress and the plan is to emulate the stable mate Empire's Choice, who also ran second in the Frank Packer plate last year, and head to Brisbane for the Rough Habit (2020m) and the Queensland Derby (2400m). Empire's Choice won both races in 2007.

TIGER IS A GEM |
Tiger Gem broke her maiden status at Canterbury on Wednesday (23rd April) when she was able to dictate terms in front and lead all the way. With 53kg and Jeff Lloyd aboard on a heavy track she had all the advantages, including fitness on her side. She was not rated on form due to finishing 9th at her previous start at Kembla Grange, however she was badly interfered with there when trying to box seat and jockey Mitchell Bell was suspended accordingly. Her previous third at Canterbury was the better indication she was up to this class.
Tiger Gem is now our fifth winner from ten starters.

Half-brother to our Fusaichi Pegasus colt yearling, `Big Choice` (3yo Choisir x Eaux De Vie) now five starts for 2 wins, a second and a third in Singapore.
Double for Laxon with Big Choice and Steel Cut
Craig Brennan Wednesday, March 26, 2008
Lightly-raced Big Choice kicked off on the right foot for trainer Laurie Laxon when successful in the $65,000 Novice Stakes over 1200 metres on Wednesday night. And Laxon made it a double later in the night when Steel Cut scored a convincing win in Race Seven. Having his first start for Laxon, Big Choice had to be ridden hard by jockey Saimee Jumaat to cross the field and lead from Lucky Wish (Barend Vorster), Chessman (Noel Callow) and Dumar (John Powell). The same four gallopers held the same four positions as the field turned for home.
After initially kicking clear and looking all over the winner, Big Choice all of a sudden looked to be paddling with 150 metres when both Lucky Wish and Chessman were throwing out strong challenges. When it appeared that Lucky Wish was about to get the upper hand over Big Choice, Saimee was able to extract that little extra from the three-year-old and he held a half-length margin on the line Lucky Wish with Chessman a neck further back in third place.
Big Choice was transferred from John Meagher’s stable shortly after scoring a six length victory over 1100 metres in an Initiation Stakes on February 15.
“He’s a very fast horse and is quite promising,” Laxon said. “He was a very fractious horse when he came to me but he’s a lot quieter now.
“I’ll keep him going for now. I don’t have anything in mind for him but the first leg of the Three-Year-Old Challenge could be a good race for him.”
The first leg of the Three-Year-Old Challenge will be run over 1200 metres on June 6.
Big Choice is an Australian-bred son by former champion sprinter Choisir from the Hennessy mare Eaux De Vie. Wednesday night’s victory was his second from just five race starts.

MAGIC MILLIONS MONTH |
It was a challenge at Magic Millions this year finding quality horses at the right price. Patinack Farm snapped up quite a few horses in the sub $100,000 bracket as well as the sales toppers. Thankfully the March weather was cooler than the traditional January heat and the horses had an extra two months to develop; to the buyer's advantage. We were looking for colts with potential to race over 1600-2400m by proven stallions and which must also pass x-ray and vet inspection. We were successful on day 1 and day 4 and the details are available on Horses Available section. (Tiger Hill colt pictured)
It was a month of placegetters for our horses with Moatize finishing 2nd at his first start, Sir James has run a nice couple of 3rds and Tiger Gem ran 3rd at her first start this preparation. King's First also finished in the prize money with 4th and so did Meninas. Only Meninas has gone for a spell so we are hoping to improve and have a successful April 2008.

XAVIER SCORES THIRD WIN IN 2008 |
Xavier made it three wins from four starts at the Randwick track yesterday (Tue 26th Feb). He was able to settle comfortably in front of the small field of five and had enough in reserve to fight off Our Mosstique, who actually headed him at the 250m mark. It was a gutsy performance over the 1550m and Danny Nikolic reported he should get over more ground in future.
Xavier was a 2006 Magic Millions purchase by King Thoroughbreds for $80,000 plus GST and has now won $118,200 in prize money. He enters the NSW Metropolitan Top Ten Horses ranks, alongside stablemates God's Hand and Occurrence.

WELCOME BACK TO RACING WITH BART |
Yes we are back racing in 2008 with a bang. Xavier has kicked our New Year off in fine style with two wins in a row. 2007 was a quiet year overall as we waited for our first horses to mature into capable 3yo's. King's First, Sir James and Tournament rewarded us with several wins early in the year, however the flu hit hard and they were unable to commence Spring campaigns. I was fortunate enough to be kept busy during this period with my newborn baby boy!

All of Bart Cummings' winners this year have recovered from the flu so it is good to see there are no long terms effects. Meninas has placed in town for us this year and we are expecting improvement as her distances increase. Tiger Gem is back in training after trialling well last year against Chinchilla Rose and Global Hawk and Moatize will also have their first starts this year. Our 2yo's, King's Suite and Rhythm x Volante Marie colt are still immature and not likely to race until later in the year.
The heavy rain in Sydney this week has resulted in heavy tracks for tomorrow's meeting at Rosehill and Kembla Grange where we will have Sir James and Global Hawk starting their campaigns. Neither is proven in the slow going. However we are looking forward to the autumn carnival and wishing Bart Cumming's stable the best of luck.
